Petey

We just completed our ninth novel of the year in my class--Ben Mikalesen's Petey.  I really do think it was one of my favorite books this year.  The story follows the life of Petey who was born in the 1920's with severe cerebral palsy.

This book not only had the perfect religious element to teach to my Catholic school students (dignity of all human life; biblical passage used, unconditional love, etc.), but it also carried personal attachment.  My cousin gave birth to a child with C.P.  Fortunately he was born in the 1990's and also had parents who loved and fought for him.  What a blessing and an inspiration they are for me.  This book reminded me of this admiration and determination.
